Hotel Chocolat Hot Chocolate

Salted Caramel - whilst the chocolate flakes have a rather strong sea salt flavour, when mixed with the milk, the caramel is the strongest flavour, which is a bonus for me. Smooth and creamy, with 50% milky chocolate, it pours perfectly from the Velvetiser and is easy to clean afterwards. 4/5

70% Classic - rich and smooth but slightly bitter, just as dark chocolate should be. The only letdown is that, once again, there's a disappointing, grainy texture at the bottom of my cup, as seems to be the case with many of the Hotel Chocolat 70% dark chocolate blends. Make sure to skip trying to get the best dregs of the cup for an enjoyable experience. 4/5

50% Milky - if you've ever wondered what the Hot Chocolate tastes like on the Polar Express, I'm pretty sure it tasted something like this. Not too sweet and beautifully smooth and silky. The dream of what drinking a purely melted chocolate bar would taste like, rather than the sweet and sticky reality. The perfect classic hot chocolate. 5/5

Orange - very (very) subtle orange flavour, made with "supermilk" chocolate flakes - 65% cacao chocolate that's both as creamy as milk chocolate with the slight bitterness of dark chocolate. Loved the taste, but disappointingly lacked any real orange flavour and paled in comparison to the chocolate orange I'd cracked open to enjoy with it (don't recommend), which lowers my enjoyment score to 3/5. However, if it had been advertised as a plain supermilk blend, my score could've easily been 4/5 or higher.

Ginger - dark and warm, a strong flavour not for the faint-hearted. Nothing is ever going to be as good as crystalised ginger dipped in dark chocolate, but this 70% dark chocolate blend has both ground ginger as well as ginger essence to really pack that ginger punch. Warms you from the inside out. Unfortunately slightly grainy texture at the bottom of my cup but still one of my favourites by far. 4.5/5

Mint - not quite as strong as an after eight chocolate, but rich and smooth with 70% dark chocolate. If you like the Hotel Chocolat mint batons, you'll love this, and I adored it. The mint takes away the bitterness of the dark chocolate, making it more refreshing, with the perfect amount of soft milky foam and smooth texture, it's going to take a lot to beat this drink 5/5

Hotel Chocolat Cold Chocolate (aka chocolate milkshake)

Banana - I had low expectations for this, after trying the Crème Brûlée. It wasn't off to a good start with a very strong chemical smell of artificial banana. However, when mixed with cold milk in the new Velvetiser, this might just be my drink of the summer. I loved it! The artificial smell totally disappeared and there was no chemical hint to the drink, nor was the flavour overpowering. I enjoyed my drink with fresh frozen banana chunks rather than ice, which meant I had lovely white chocolate banana bites to savour after. 5/5

Crème Brûlée - Honestly? Disappointing. Crème Brûlée is one of my favourite deserts and I was so excited to try this but this was just a mild caramel flavour, rather than rich and creamy. Purchased at a Hotel Chocolat café and served in a chilled glass with ice. 2/5
